Here are some frequently asked questions from insureds like you.

A deductible is the amount of damages that you agree you will be responsible for if you have a claim.

Most insurance policies have a deductible which states that a portion of the amount paid for the loss will be subtracted (deducted) from the amount the insurance company would otherwise pay. So, no worries about paying out-of-pocket for the deductible. Instead, it's typically taken from the overall payment by the insurance company for the loss.
Deductibles serve several functions. Shifting the cost of small claims to the person buying the insurance (a.k.a: an insured) enables the insurance company to reduce premiums (yay!). Small dollar claims often cost more to adjust and settle than the claim itself. The cost of insurance would be much higher if there were no deductibles. The higher the deductible, the lower the premium. It's that simple.
Collision and other than collision coverages are subject to a deductible. Several options are available including a reducing deductible option. With this option, your deductibles reduce by $100 for each annual loss-free period. You can find your deductible(s) on your declaration pages.
Yes, property coverages have deductibles. For example: There was damage to your personal property in the amount of $6,250. You carry a $1,000 deductible on your personal property. Therefore, your claim payment would be for $5,250. ($6,250 - $1,000 = $5,250) Check your policy information page to see what deductible(s) you have.
The right of Clever Insurance, who has paid for your loss, to pursue recovery from the third party who is responsible for your loss. This ensures that the responsible party is held accountable for their actions. We work for you to attempt to recover losses, to include returning your deductible to you when our recovery efforts are successful. We've got your back.
As property ages and becomes worn, it often loses value. The loss of value must be taken into account in order to determine the actual cash value of the property at the time of the loss. Depreciation calculation example: Let's say your flat screen tv has a normal life expectancy of 10 years. Under normal conditions, the tv could depreciate at a rate of 10 percent per year. If the tv is 3 years old with typical wear and tear, the depreciated amount is 30 percent, (10 percent x 3 years = 30 percent). The actual cash value of the tv could be determined as follows: Replacement Cost (100%) minus depreciation (30%) = Actual Cash Value (70%).
Actual Cash Value or ACV is a method of valuing insured property. Actual Cash Value is not equal to replacement cost value. ACV is computed by subtracting depreciation from replacement cost. Depreciation is the decrease in the value of property over a period of time, usually as a result of age, wear and tear, or economic obsolescence. For example, if you have ACV dwelling (home) coverage and your home is destroyed in a fire, then depreciation is deducted from your claim payment due to the age and condition of your home at the time of the loss. Another way to think about Actual Cash Value is that it is typically the amount for which property could be sold, which is generally less than what it would cost to replace it.
Replacement cost loss settlement on personal property considers the initial price tag paid for the items, regardless of any potential depreciation due to age or condition. Replacement cost on personal property is generally the most recommended option since it gets homeowners closest to their living situation before the covered loss occurred. For example, if your 5 year old flat screen TV gets damaged in a loss, your policy will pay for you to get a new flat screen, similar to what you had. It will not deduct depreciation due to its age.
If your policy provides a replacement cost settlement option, full reimbursement for replacement cost may take place in the form of two or more payments. Typically, the initial payment is for the actual cash value of the repair or replacement. Our renters policy allows you to make further claim within 180 days of the original loss settlement if you have completed the repair or replacement of the damaged property. To make the replacement cost claim, you simply need to contact your personal claims representative and provide itemized receipts for the completed repairs or replacement.
This coverage reduces your collision and other than collision deductibles as long as no claims over $250 have been paid by Clever during the 12-month period following the date the reducing deductible coverage was added. Essentially, as long as you keep your reducing deductible coverage continuously in force, we knock $100 off your deductible for each loss-free period. Your reduction becomes effective at the next renewal date following 12 months after the date the reducing deductible coverage was added, and your credit applies only up to the original deductible value. Notice that you can file claims and keep your deductible credit – the claims just can’t be over $250 a year. Pretty sweet, huh?

If Clever does end up paying for a loss (under any coverage except uninsured motor vehicle or underinsured motor vehicle) over that $250 limit, the original collision and other than collision deductibles will be reinstated at the next renewal date. And, each vehicle with the reducing deductible coverage must be individually insured as a single unit on a separate policy. If you didn't sign up for reducing deductible but decide you want it later, you can always add it to an existing policy on its renewal date.
